When it comes to travel, whether it’s to another city, another state, or another country, there’s no doubt that there’s something purely enchanting about the experience.

Maybe it’s the new foods you get to try, or the sights you see. Maybe it’s the romantic fling you had while you were there, or the new bestie you made.

In a time where constant connectivity is the norm and being ‘plugged in’ to our phones, tablets, laptops, etc. makes up the majority of our daily lives, travel offers a much needed respite for us in more ways than one.

In fact, a new study heralds this theory, and found that ‘digital free tourism’ is something that’s not only increasingly in demand, but also a more necessary liberation than ever.

In the study, participants reported that digitally disconnecting while traveling led them to feel more engaged during their trips, and also reported that they felt far more attentive and focused on their surroundings, rather than constantly being distracted by new messages, alerts, and other notifications from their apps.

Doing a digital detox is beneficial for a multitude of reasons, but its benefits may be even more pronounced when we’re traveling and thus removed from our normal environments.

It may be that a digital detox simply affords us with the ability to live in the present moment, consequently allowing us to feel even more connected to the place where we are, the people we’re with, and the experiences we’re having.

Perhaps there is something to be said for going ‘off the grid,’ and embracing a digital free lifestyle when traveling.

So the next time when you travel, find ways to unplug and disconnect from your devices. It may not be the easiest transition at first, but the rewards are well worth it.
