For many of us that plan to travel this summer, staying hydrated is often a challenge that we face. Between flying, salty airport snacks, vigorous outdoor activities, and perhaps a few summery cocktails thrown in, it can be difficult to consume enough water.
Fortunately, there are a few tips you can follow to easily up your water intake, even when on the go. Keep reading to learn what they are.
How to Stay Hydrated While Traveling
1. Start hydrating before you travel. Dehydration is common when it comes to travel, particularly when flying. Stay ahead of dehydration and start drinking more water a couple of days in advance before you leave. This way when you step on the plane, you’re already starting out your trip well hydrated and ready to go.
2. Use the 1:1 rule. We all like to enjoy a drink (or two) when we’re on vacation, but this doesn’t mean you should neglect your water intake. When you consume an alcoholic beverage, make it a rule to follow it up with a glass of water. This way you’re not only staying hydrated, but also minimizing the not-so-pretty effects of a potential hangover.
3. Top up often. When traveling, be sure to carry a water bottle with you that you can easily fill up when you’re on the go. For example, when you’re leaving a restaurant, you can either ask the waiter to fill you up before leaving, or fill it up yourself if there’s a pitcher on the table.
4. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is another way to get some of your water intake during the day. Fruits and vegetables are comprised mostly of water, so be sure to order meals that have at least a side of fruits and/or veggies.
5. Set reminders. If you’re still having a tough time reaching your water quota while traveling, try setting reminders throughout the day. For example, hourly alarms that remind you to drink a full glass of water can help keep you on track with your hydration levels.
