We all have that  list of dreams and goals that are safely tucked away into  the folds of our brains.

Days, months, and even years may pass where we keep that list hidden away, and never even glimpse the possibility of seeing those dreams come to fruition.

And why do we let this happen? Why do we deny ourselves the opportunity of seeing these goals through?

We can come up with a number of excuses.

I’m too busy.

One day, just not today.

Before I can start on that goal, I must accomplish X, Y, Z first.

I don’t have the skills needed to accomplish that goal.

And the list goes on.

We can always find a reason or way to prevent ourselves from going after what we truly desire, and ultimately it is this pattern of thinking that guarantees our certain failure from reaching our goals.

Reaching a goal is never insurmountable, however. It all comes down to your mindset, setting meaningful goals, and pairing your determination with actionable steps.

So if you’re ready to stop putting off your hopes and dreams, and ready to start pursuing your goals, follow these 8 steps to achieve any and all of your goals.

8 Steps to Achieve Your Goals

1. Don’t let your circumstances define or control what you can do. All too often we let ourselves become victims of our circumstances. We allow our own perceived shortcomings and present situation to stand in the way of what we truly desire, rather than dreaming big and thinking far beyond our current reality. You are more than capable of achieving exactly what you want, but you have to give yourself the opportunity to believe it.

2. Make your goal a necessity. Our goals sometimes fall by the wayside when we fail to invest more than we should in not just the goal itself, but the entire process that comes with setting and ultimately achieving that goal. If you truly want to achieve a goal, act as if your life depends on it. Why? When you shift to a determined mindset, you commit yourself entirely to achieving it, and you can bet that you’ll find a creative solution for reaching that goal. While your goal is probably not a life or death scenario, the most creative solutions arrive when everything is placed on the line. As the saying goes, “Necessity is the mother of invention.”

3. Embrace accountability. Accountability. The word in itself sounds like a lecture. Accountability often takes on a negative connotation, but try to see accountability as more of an insurance policy for your goal. It’s your commitment to ensuring your own success, no matter how arduous the journey may be.

4. Set a deadline. Give yourself a realistic timeframe to work with as you pursue your goal. Place the date on your calendar close enough to where you don’t feel tempted to slack off, but far enough off to make sure you have the time to complete it.

5. Confront your self-limiting beliefs. The greatest obstacle you will face when pursuing your goals isn’t the naysayers, or time, or even less than ideal circumstances. It’s you. You can be either your greatest advocate or your worst enemy when it comes to reaching your potential. You may tell yourself that you just ‘don’t have what it takes to be successful.’ Or you may actively look for perceived flaws and shortcomings that will in some way lead to your goal’s demise.  Don’t stand in the way of your own success, and confront the beliefs you have that are holding you back.

6. Seek advice from others. Your motivation will primarily come from within, but it doesn’t hurt to have a few nudges for that extra bit of inspiration from others who have also overcome adversity or challenges in working towards their goals. Whether you have a mentor at work you can talk to, a family friend, or even if you have a favorite inspirational speaker you like to listen to, make it a point to set aside time to garner advice from these people. Commit yourself to developing a ‘success’ mindset and attitude, and you will undoubtedly reach your goals faster.

7. Identify what isn’t working. When working towards your goals, it’s important that you’re realistic in identifying not only what’s working, but also what’s not working. It’s perfectly fine (and even advantageous) to make mistakes, but if you’re repeatedly making the same mistakes, then you’re not just wasting your time, you’re also living in denial. Maybe your timeline is too short. Or maybe you currently lack one of the necessary skills to complete this goal. Whatever is not working, confront the issue head-on.

8. Be bold. Now is the time to stop wondering, and start doing. Be bold in your actions and decisive in your choices. It’s up to you to fulfill your dreams, and it all starts with taking that first step.
