Essential oils pack a punch when it comes to promoting better health, particularly in the winter.

So much of our lives are spent indoors, and when winter rolls around, we’re basically in hibernation mode.

While being cozy indoors when the weather outside is frightful may sound great, research continues to show that the air inside our homes actually contains far more pollutants than the air outdoors. Scary, huh?

Fortunately though, there’s an all-too-easy way to combat toxins, cleanse the air, AND eliminate odors in your home.

Keep reading to learn which essential oils you should be diffusing in your home this winter.

The Best Essential Oils to Diffuse in the Winter

1. Citrus oils. Lemon, grapefruit, and sweet orange oils are perfect for use in the winter due to their antimicrobial properties. Plus, citrus oils contain a high level of limonene, and thus are able to destroy airborne germs. Try diffusing these oils in your home in rooms where there is more activity.

2. Peppermint oil. There’s nothing more wintry than the scent of peppermint. Peppermint is also a great option for diffusing in the winter as it supports the lungs in filtering out environmental toxins.

3. Clove oil. Clove oil boasts a number of health benefits. Along with being a natural antimicrobial, anti-fungal, and antiseptic oil, it’s packed with antioxidants, making it the perfect oil for winter. Diffuse this warm, spicy scented oil in your home to reap its benefits.

4. Woodsy oils. Eucalyptus and tea tree oils have been shown to kill the airborne flu virus, while cinnamon bark has also been proven to eliminate airborne bacteria. Conifer oils like spruce and fir are also excellent options as they contain pinene, a compound that both clears and supports the lungs. While some woodsy oils are far too potent for skincare, like cinnamon bark, diffusing them is a great way to cut down on indoor pollution, while also reducing bacteria.
