It’s hard to imagine the holidays being as festive or fun without all the cooking, baking (and eating) that typically comes with them.

Whether it’s a freshly baked pumpkin pie, homemade eggnog, warm snickerdoodle cookies, or other rich, flavorful foods, these dishes call for a number of spices that are actually quite healthful, not to mention beneficial when it comes to promoting healing.

This holiday season, use these three rich spices to not only add more flavor to your holiday cooking, but to also promote better health and healing.

The Best Holiday Spices for Healing and Better Health

1. Nutmeg.  Typically added in to cream sauces, and usually creamy deserts (e.g., pumpkin pie), nutmeg boasts a number of health benefits. It’s a fantastic digestive aid, and is especially helpful for digesting rich, dairy-filled foods that are common around the holidays. Add a few dashes of nutmeg wherever you can. It will help your stomach to cope better with the effects of consuming rich foods, deserts, and of course, those late night snacks.

2. Cinnamon. Cinnamon is perhaps one of the best all-around spices when it comes to promoting whole body health. Not only does it help to increase warmth and circulation (a plus in the winter months), but it also supports more efficient digestion of richer foods, and can even fight against cold and flu-like symptoms. Try adding it into your oatmeal in the morning, or in your coffee, and definitely sprinkle some into your holiday baking.

3. Cloves. Few spices are as recognizable or well-known as cloves when it comes to holiday baking. Cloves have a rich, distinct aroma that is not only pleasant to taste, but also amazing to smell, especially around the holidays. Like cinnamon, cloves are effective in fighting cold-like symptoms, especially when it comes to sinus health. Heavy deserts are known to congest the sinuses, but cloves effectively counteract these effects, and help to resolve phlegm.  Add it to savory dishes, along with sweeter deserts, like cookies, breads, and pies.
