We all know by now just how important it is to eat fruits and veggies every day, but are there certain vegetables we should gravitate more towards? Are some vegetables better or healthier for us than others?
According to the International Journal of Cancer, eating particular fruits and vegetables may indeed be healthier for us, especially when it comes to preventing cancer.
These conclusions were drawn after analyzing data from over 180,000 women who were tracked for an average of 24 years. The research found that women who consumed the most fruits and vegetables experienced the lowest rates of breast cancer. And the more servings of fruits and vegetables women consumed daily, the less likely they were to develop cancer, especially the most aggressive forms of breast cancer.
However, not all vegetables provide the same amount of cancer prevention qualities. Orange and yellow vegetables, such as squash or sweet potatoes, along with cruciferous veggies, like kale, cabbage, or broccoli, outperformed other veggies when it came to boosting health and preventing disease.
It’s unsure as to why these types of vegetables are more effective when it comes to cancer prevention, but scientists believe that it may be the high levels of antioxidants and fiber found in these vegetables.
So the next time you’re out grocery shopping for the week, stock up on orange, yellow, and cruciferous vegetables, and make it a habit to consume these types of veggies several times a week. Although a relatively simple lifestyle change, it may be one of the most effective when it comes to safeguarding your health.
