With the advent of social media and continual advances in technology, it’s easier than ever to seemingly stay in touch with those we love most.

With social media, we can see the highlight reel of the people we know. We get to stay up to date with their lives and experiences.

But does that mean we’re actually staying in touch? Does social media time really translate to quality time?

Probably not. When it comes to maintaining and strengthening our long-distance relationships, a few likes or a comment here and there just isn’t enough.

10 Things No One Tells You When You’re in a Long-Distance Relationship.

Luckily, there are a few, easy ways you can both maintain and strengthen your long-distance relationships. So no matter how far away you are from your best friend, your family, or even your significant other, these 6 tips will help you to keep your relationship feeling stronger and closer than ever.

How to Maintain and Strengthen Long-Distance Relationships

1. Save the date. Whether it’s a year from now or next month, mark your reunion on the calendar. Having something for the two of you to look forward to will keep your relationship strong and give you the chance to create new memories.

2. Remember their birthday. When it comes to your friend or loved one’s birthday, make it special in some way. Don’t leave a simple message on their Facebook wall. Send them a card. Give them a call. Or send them a gift via Amazon. Whatever you do, put the little bit of extra thought and effort into making them feel special.

3. Send them a letter. One of the easiest, most thoughtful ways to let someone know you’re thinking of them is to write them a letter. Handwritten letters have a far more lasting impact than a text, or even an email. Whether it’s their birthday, a new baby, or a new home, taking the time to write a letter will show that you’re thinking of them.

4. Fall back on traditions. Maybe you and your friend like to meet up over the holidays for a Christmas movie marathon. Or maybe you both are addicted to the same TV show and have to catch up every week after the newest episode. Traditions like these are what keeps the relationship strong. Fall back on these traditions whenever you can, especially if you’re needing a way to reconnect.

5. Create new memories together. As great as the good ol’ days were for you and your pal, take every opportunity you can to create new memories together. Having things to look forward to together, and then ultimately sharing those experiences will both maintain and strengthen your relationship.

6. And remember the good ol’ days. As your relationship ages, it’s important to reflect on your best memories together in the relationship. The good ol’ days are what brought you and your friend together in the first place. Reminisce about those memories and experiences together.
