There are a lot of misconceptions out there when it comes to working from home. Being able to sleep in, working in your pjs, and having a less demanding workload are just some of them.

But what most people don’t realize about working from home is that you still have to be professional, efficient, and yes, very productive.

That being said, there are several challenges that arise when working from home-challenges you normally wouldn’t encounter in a traditional office space.

Luckily, there are a few straightforward tips you can follow to maximize your productivity and efficiency when working, even if you’re at home.

Keep reading to learn how you can successfully work from home.

5 Tips to Work Efficiently and Successfully from Home

1. Dress the part. Not going into the office today means being able to wear your favorite yoga pants all day, right? While a tempting wardrobe choice to make, choosing to relax your style too much can actually affect your mindset for work. How you dress affects the frame of mind you adopt for your work day. So if you dress in your loungewear for the day, it’s likely you’ll feel less focused and less productive. On the other hand, if you dress the part for work, you’ll feel more productive and ready to take on the work day.

2. Minimize all distractions. Working from home may sound great, but it actually presents a host of challenges that you wouldn’t encounter in a traditional office. The laundry overflowing from the basket. The dirty dishes in the sink. The neighbor’s dog barking next door. Or the arrival of your Amazon package to your front door are all ways in which we can get distracted from our work. Before you start work for the day, be sure to minimize all distractions that could otherwise get in the way of your work. Shut the blinds. Put your laundry in the bedroom.  Close the social media tabs on your computer. By taking a few extra steps like this, you can help create a more focused environment for your day.

3. Set and stick to your working hours. If you work for a company, it’s likely you already have set hours to follow. But if you’re your own boss, the lines get a little blurry. Be sure to set your hours and do your best to stick to them-whether you’re part time or full time. By sticking to a schedule, you can better plan out your work day, making it easier to accomplish your tasks.

4. Make your “office” a dedicated work space. Not everyone has a spare room that they can transform into an office for their work, but if you do-that’s great! But if you are using your dining table or family room as your “office,” it’s still possible to create a  space that is conducive to work. Clear any clutter away. Draw the blinds. Do what you need to do to create a space that is both comfortable and work-focused.

5. Keep it professional. Whether you’re in the car on the phone, emailing a colleague from the office, or from home, make sure all of your interactions are professional. It can be tempting to let your sense of professional decorum slide a bit when you’re outside the office, but doing so can quickly and negatively affect not only your work productivity, but also your professional reputation. Working from home should be no different than in the office when interacting with others and getting your work done. Strive to keep it professional while you’re on the clock.
