How smoothly our days go is usually almost completely reliant on how organized we are. In fact, research as found that we experience more energy, enhanced productivity, and even reduced stress when we are more organized.

I know I can attest to these findings. When I’m not organized on a day-to-day basis, I quickly feel overwhelmed, stressed out, and unproductive.

Luckily, I’ve found a few simple ways to keep me more organized throughout the day. Use these 7 tips to feel less stressed, more productive and to stay organized every day.

How to Keep Your Day-to-Day Life Organized

1. Stay on top of your planner. Whether you prefer a digital calendar online, or something a bit more-old school like an actual planner, commit to your planner and use it to your every advantage. Pencil in your appointments and meetings, note the days you do laundry, and even the days you plan to do your grocery shopping. Keeping your schedule updated and checking in on it frequently is key to staying organized on a day-to-day basis.

2. Perfect your morning routine. Have you ever had one of those mornings where you woke up late, skipped breakfast, couldn’t find your keys, and spent way too much time trying to just pick out an outfit? Mornings like these set the tone for the rest of your day, and often contribute to what feels like a very disorganized, chaotic pattern for how your day unfolds. Don’t let this happen, and polish your morning routine so that you feel both productive and organized when you start out your day.

3. Adopt a cleaning schedule. While many of us may prefer to leave all of our cleaning for the weekend, doing so can lead to a lot of unnecessary stress. We may run out of clean clothes to wear by mid-week, and leaving everything up to the weekend to accomplish may make our weekends more stressful than relaxing. Break up your cleaning so that your home feels more organized on a daily basis. For example, do your laundry on Tuesdays and Thursdays, or clean your bathroom mid-week. One thing I like to do is to wipe down the kitchen counters and make sure all the dishes are done every evening. This way when I wake up in the morning, everything is clean and ready to go for the day.

4. Leave your essentials in the same spot. Find a central location where you can leave your keys, phone, wallet, purse, and any other essentials you need for the day. This way you’re not running around every morning trying to locate your essentials, and wondering where you left your phone or wallet.

5. Keep a notepad handy. Throughout the day there will undoubtedly be unplanned tasks, errands or notes that pop up that you’ll need to keep track of. Carry a notepad with you to keep track of these, and check in on your notes frequently to make sure you’re staying on top of any extra to-dos.

6. Plan out your meals. Whether it’s on a daily, every other day, or even weekly basis, take a few minutes to plan out your upcoming meals. This is a great way to keep your grocery list updated and to help you know how much time you need to make certain meals, while also eliminating unnecessary or extra grocery store runs.

7. Identify your most important tasks every morning. While you may have a running task list that you keep on your notepad or in your planner, take the time every morning to identify your top three to five tasks you wish to accomplish that day. This way if your day gets more stressful or chaotic than planned, you can still feel a sense of accomplishment when you’ve completed these tasks by the end of the day.
