Road Tests: Best Creams for Sensitive, Dry, Acne-Prone Skin

If you can’t tell by several of my previous posts, I have exceptionally sensitive skin. On top of having periodic bouts of acne (although it used to be way worse in high school and college), I also have both eczema and rosacea. Let me tell you, it’s been a super fun journey trying out tons of facial creams, treatments and lotions to keep all of these skin conditions in check!

While winter is often a blessing for my acne since oil glands are known to shrink in colder weather, the winter season also brings its own struggles as far as trying to keep my face moisturized. So for any of you out there that are also trying to keep your skin moisturized but without irritating your acne or any other skin conditions, I know exactly how you feel!

Trying to keep your face moisturized while also keeping your skin clear and free of other irritations is a balancing act. On the one hand, your skin needs the extra moisture, but on the other, you have to be careful of which products you use so that they don’t cause an acne or eczema flare-up. Plus, wouldn’t it be nice if the lotions or creams we used didn’t cause that super-greasy appearance and feel?

Exposed Skincare

I have tested out a lot of products over the years to help with my acne, rosacea, and eczema, which is why I’m going to share with you what has worked best for me in balancing my skin. Please keep in mind that what I recommend may not always work the same for you, so it’s definitely worth it to try a few products and experiment to see what works best for you.

To help organize this post based on specific skin needs, I have broken down the sections to more accurately address common skin issues.

Best all-around, daily moisturizer for sensitive, acne-prone skin: Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture for Sensitive Skin. This moisturizer is perfect for everyday application, particularly in the morning before applying your makeup. The spf version is also great, too. I use it every morning right after I get out of the shower (unless I steam my face first), and at nighttime after I wash my face. It provides just the right amount of moisture for all day hydration, but without leaving your face greasy. Plus, it’s non-comedegenic so you don’t have to worry about it causing acne!

Best nighttime cream for sensitive/combination skin in winter: Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream . Ok, so I realize that on the bottle that it says it’s meant for applying to your body, but I’ve tried the tub version that’s intended for your face, and I still think this kind is better. Plus, it’s more hygienic coming out of a tube rather than dipping your hands in it every time. This heavy moisturizer is great for soaking into your skin every night in the winter, and I’ve found it also helps to minimize any redness overnight, as well. Plus, you don’t have to worry about it clogging your pores.

Best cream for facial eczema: CeraVe Moisturizing Cream. This is hands-down the best cream I’ve found yet for eczema flare-ups, and it has thousands of reviews on Amazon that can further attest to how great it is. This non-comedegenic, non-irritating moisturizer also has the seal of approval from the National Eczema Association. On top of calming my eczema, I’ve found it also helps to soothe any rashes or redness I may have.

Best cream for sensitive, acne-prone, rosacea skin: Puriya Mother of all Creams. If you have rosacea, eczema (or both), dermatitis, a rash, or any kind of skin irritation (even an insect bite), look no further than this rich, soothing cream. This cream is a cure-all for so many skin issues, and it was recommended to me by a friend that also has super sensitive skin. This intensive moisturizer helps to reduce any redness, swelling, or itchiness, and it contains NO artificial fragrances or colors. Additionally, it has a plethora of natural, calming ingredients like aloe vera, rosemary, shea nut butter, and honey. If you’re still not convinced, look at some of the reviews and pictures on Amazon-it’s a Godsend for a number of skin issues!

For dry patches of skin: Aquaphor Healing Ointment Advanced Therapy. For the occasional, stubborn dry patches of skin, I’ll often resort to using this ointment overnight. Aquaphor is great for treating rough, dry patches of skin, and helps to quickly restore moisture.  It’s also perfect to use on dry lips during the colder season.

Best under-eye cream for sensitive skin: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Eye Gel-Cream. This eye cream is perfect for daily use particularly before applying makeup, or for an added boost of hydration, at nighttime, as well. It’s oil, dye, and fragrance-free, as well as non-comedegenic.

Finding the right regimen of products for your skin is a balancing act, and the regimen you use may vary from season to season.  So while you may find that a heavier cream works best for you in the winter, you may need something lighter in the summer months.  Hopefully, you’ll have as much luck with these products as I have!
