We all know by now just how important it is to exercise and stay active if we want to live health, satisfying lives. And while exercise is key to keeping our physical health in check, it’s also essential for keeping stress and anxiety at bay.
This holiday season, take advantage of the many benefits of staying active, and use exercise as a way of staying balanced and healthy. Follow these five tips to stay active during the holidays.
How to Stay Active During the Holidays
1. Don’t let your holiday turn into a holi-“week”. It’s all too easy to let one day of not working out slide into the next day, and the next day, and so on. Avoid a holi-“week” of not working out by getting back to an active lifestyle the day after the holiday. Even if it’s just going for a walk or an easy jog, some activity is better than none!
2. Plan out time every day to squeeze in some activity. When it comes to working out over the holidays, you don’t have to make your exercise grueling or more time consuming. Just plan out time every day to be active in some way. Whether it’s walking around the neighborhood to look at the lights, doing an online ab workout first thing in the morning, or going on a short walk after a big meal, staying active throughout the day is key.
3. Plan ahead. Plan ahead for your workouts, and take advantage of any down time throughout the day. Exercise is a great way to manage holiday stress, and will help you to more efficiently digest those rich holiday meals.
4. Make it festive. Working out around the holidays doesn’t have to be stressful. Make exercise fun and festive, and take advantage of seasonal activities. Go ice skating with your friends, or go sledding!
5. Don’t beat yourself up. It’s all too easy to beat ourselves up when we overindulge over the holidays, but don’t get too down on yourself. The holidays come only once a year, and it’s perfectly fine to indulge yourself from time to time. Let yourself have that extra piece of homemade fudge, or that cup of holiday cider. Indulging yourself a little can make the holidays that much more fun, especially when you’re with friends and family.
