For many of us (myself included), the day doesn’t officially start until we’ve had our morning cup of joe.

A plethora of studies have shown just how healthful a cup of coffee is in the morning, from spurring our energy levels to reducing our risk of type 2 diabetes.

But sometimes, black coffee just doesn’t cut it, and we need a little something extra in our coffee.

Curious to see what kind of healthy AND delicious add-ins you can use to make your basic coffee not so basic? Read on to learn more about these 7 yummy, healthful ingredients you should be adding to your morning brew.

7 Healthy and Delicious Add-In Ideas for Your Coffee

1. Cinnamon. Cinnamon packs a punch when it comes to health benefits without adding extra calories. From reducing inflammation, lowering blood sugar and triglyceride levels, to boosting your immunity, cinnamon is the perfect spice for your morning brew. Add ground cinnamon directly into your grounds before brewing, or a few dashes post brew.

2. Cardamom. Cardamom is a spice typically added to coffee in the Middle East. It adds a rich, exotic flavor to coffee, and is somewhat similar to ginger. Just one, two-tablespoon serving is packed with good for you fiber, minerals, and even contains cancer fighting elements. Additionally, cardamom has been shown to help control cholesterol levels, improve circulation, and fights a host of diseases. Add a pinch to your morning cup of joe, or add a few seeds to your grounds pre-brew.

3. Grass-fed butter. Whether you love the keto diet or not, adding in a healthy serving of grass-fed butter boasts a number of health benefits, while adding some creamy goodness to your coffee. Grass fed butter is an excellent source of saturated fats, which helps to improve energy, and even supports brain function.

4. Vanilla extract. For those of us that love coffee creamers, vanilla extract is a great substitute, but without all the added sugars and fat. Vanilla has been shown to enhance mental performance, and also boasts mood boosting properties. Additionally, it’s a digestive aid and can help to calm stomach issues. Add a few drops to your coffee or even add a vanilla bean to your grounds before brewing.

5. Cayenne pepper. For those that like a bit more pep to their coffee, cayenne pepper is a great way to kickstart your day. Cayenne contains capsaicin, which is packed with health benefits. It’s been shown to improve circulation, support heart health, and even helps to burn fat. Just be careful and use a light hand when sprinkling it into your coffee, otherwise it may be a bit too hot.

6. Maple extract. Who doesn’t love the aroma of fresh pancakes drenched in maple syrup? For the same flavor, minus all the extra calories and sugar, try adding in a little maple extract to your morning brew. Maple extract is a proven infection fighter and immune system supporter. Drizzle a little into your coffee to enjoy these health benefits (and for a sweeter caffeine fix).

7. Dark chocolate. This is arguably one of the best, yummiest add-ins for your cuppa coffee, and it’s definitely addictive. Dark chocolate has a number of amazing health benefits, including its ability to lower blood pressure, elevate “good” cholesterol, and even enhance brain functioning. Try adding in a two-inch square of dark chocolate to your mug before pouring your hot brew over it. Stir to mix completely.
