With work being more accessible than ever (e.g., working remotely), the line between work and our personal lives is more blurred than ever. This means it’s also more challenging than ever for us to find that work life balance.

Taking meaningful, structured time for yourself, while also allocating enough time and energy for you to properly fulfill your work duties can help you to find that optimal work life balance your life needs. However, finding that balance is easier said than done.

Learn how you can achieve a healthier work life balance with these 4 tips.

4 Ways to Achieve a Healthier Work Life Balance

1. Define your personal boundaries. Working remotely, carrying a separate phone for work, and having 24/7 access to our work email are just some of the ways that the lines between work and our personal lives get blurred. It can be tempting to never fully leave work at work when we’re always connected in some way to the office. For the sake of your mental health though, you should make every effort to set your own personal boundaries. For example, not checking your work email after 5 p.m., or not taking late night phone calls are examples of the boundaries you can set to more clearly define the line between work and your personal life.

2. Don’t skimp on sleep. One of the most important things we can do for both our personal and professional lives is to make time for quality sleep. Not getting enough sleep is detrimental to our health in more ways than one. Symptoms of anxiety, reduced immunity, compromised thinking/learning are just a few of the outcomes of not getting enough sleep, all of which affect our work life balance. For the sake of your health and well-being, prioritize your sleep.

3. Make time to unplug. Disconnecting from your devices on a regular basis is a tremendously effective tool for when you need to recharge your batteries and find a balance in your life. Make the time to unplug for a bit, whether it’s every Sunday afternoon, or weeknights for an hour. Give your mind the break it needs to relax and unwind.

4. Embrace the power of saying no. When you make yourself readily available to others – whether it’s your boss or your needy friend – you set yourself up for being overloaded and overextended. While saying yes make seem like a harmless habit at first, it can quickly and negatively affect your ability to have a healthy work life balance. If you tend to say yes straight away without thinking your answer through when someone asks something of you, harness the power of saying no. Or, if you can’t say no upfront, delay your answer and stall until you come up with an excuse. It’s not selfish to say no to others’ demands of you. In fact, saying no shows others that you respect and value your time, and that they should do the same.
