While the holidays are typically a joyous time of year, it can also be a very stressful time, and for some, very lonely and isolating.

Whether it’s experiencing stress from family get-togethers, having too many end-of-year deadlines to meet at work, or missing loved ones that are no longer with us, it’s easy to forget the true meaning of this special time of year.

This year, use these tips to not only make the holiday season more meaningful, but to also invite the spirit of the season into your life.

How to Make the Holiday Season More Meaningful

1. Take your time. With all the hustle and bustle that comes with the busy holiday season, it’s easy to feel frenzied and rushed. Rather than trying to tick off as many tasks as possible in the shortest amount of time, slow down. Take your time. The holidays come only once a year, and racing through  life is never conducive to experiencing joy or fulfillment. Take the time every day to practice mindfulness, whether it’s through journaling, meditating, or any calming practice that brings you back to the present.

2. Use nature as medicine. Nature is a powerful, grounding force that is just the antidote for holiday stress.  When we connect with nature, we’re reminded of what matters most, and this redirects our focus away from the materialism that unfortunately often defines the holidays. Plus, if you find the holidays to be overstimulating and/or wearisome, immersing yourself in nature is key to to finding a balance amidst the chaos.

3. Volunteer your time. For some of us, the holidays may make us feel lonely, or even isolated. However, there’s no better cure for this than to volunteer and give your time to others. Whether it’s donating toys that your children have grown out of, volunteering at a shelter, or visiting a senior home, find ways to give back to others. You’ll quickly find that the season takes on much more meaning when you simply give back.

4. Create rituals that are meaningful. The holidays and their associated traditions were originally created to help us connect to the seasons, the passage of time, and the very meaning of these holidays. And yet, it seems we move further and further away from these rich traditions and roots every year. Consider creating new, meaningful rituals this year that revitalize the meaning of the season for you and your family. Whether it’s going to church together, picking out a Christmas tree, or giving to the needy, create rituals that will serve as reminders as to why this season is so special.

5. Choose gratitude over all. The holiday season is intended to be a time of giving, but it often turns into a season of consumption. We all have things we want to do, things we want to buy, or resolutions we want to incorporate into our lives. But in reality, we should be grateful for what we already have. Gratitude is an attitude, and one that can profoundly affect your outlook on life, even during this often stressful time of year.
