Whether breast cancer runs in your family or not, there’s no denying that we could all benefit from taking a few precautionary measures to help prevent cancer in the long run.
According to breastcancer.org, about 1 in 8 women (or 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer during her lifetime. Additionally worth noting is that for women in the USA, breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer.
As someone who has breast cancer that runs on both my mom and dad’s sides of the family, I may already be predisposed to developing this type of cancer later in life, which is one of the primary reasons why I decided to end my long-term relationship with the pill.
However, I’m always looking for additional ways to decrease my chances of developing cancer one day. From eating specific vegetables to working out more, I think it’s important to be proactive and do what I can as early on as possible.
As it turns out though, there may be one fairly easy approach we can all take to reduce our chances of developing breast cancer, even if we are die-hard carnivores. Plus, it doesn’t require popping pills, or even getting sweaty at the gym.
According to this study, the findings suggest that eating more red meat may increase your chances of developing breast cancer, while eating more chicken may actually prevent your chances of developing it.
Getting into the details a bit further, out of the several thousand women that were studied for more than seven years, women who consumed the greatest amount of red meat had a 23% higher risk compared to those who consumed the lower amount. Interestingly enough though, increasing poultry consumption led to a decreased invasive breast cancer risk.
The exact mechanisms for how poultry reduces cancer risk is still unclear at this time, but the findings are incredibly insightful. It may be that this simple dietary change could actually keep many of us from ever developing breast cancer. Pretty cool, huh?
For those of you that are beef lovers though, don’t freak out. You don’t need to throw red meat out of your diet altogether. However, it may be a safe bet to simply replace red meat with chicken when the option is available. For example, opt for the chicken tacos over the steak tacos next time, okay?
