At the end of a long, stressful day, who doesn’t love to sit down and unwind with a full-bodied glass of red wine?
As a new study has shown, there may be far more benefits to red wine than just its relaxing effects.
Resveratrol has long been lauded for its longevity boosting benefits. But as it turns out, this same compound found in grapes and berries (and red wine) may also have the ability to fend off symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Not bad, huh?
Resveratrol contains a plethora of healthful advantages. It’s packed with antioxidants and ant-inflammatory agents that support heart health, and may also even guard against cancer.
But what really makes resveratrol special, according to this research, is that it contains neuroprotective effects against the stress hormone, corticosterone. High levels of corticosterone are what lead to both anxiety and depressive symptoms.
Consequently, it’s not just the alcohol that is relaxing you when you sip your red wine. Rather, that lovely glass of Merlot or Cabernet that contains resveratrol may actually be fighting your stress, which in turn causes you to feel relaxed.
This doesn’t mean you should strive to finish an entire bottle at the end of a long day. As with everything, moderation is key. However, there’s no denying that red wine should be enjoyed not just for its soothing effects, but also for its multitude of health benefits.
