Many of us struggle to be at ease when it comes to being alone, and the very idea of solitude, to some of us, may sound extremely uncomfortable.

It’s easy to confuse being alone for experiencing loneliness, when in fact the two concepts aren’t exactly interchangeable.

Loneliness is a result of feeling isolated or dissatisfied with your social relationships, while spending time alone can mean actually enjoying solitude and the opportunity to spend time with yourself.

Spending time alone comes with a number of perks. In fact, spending time in solitude has been linked with elevated levels of creativity and problem solving skills, and can even increase empathy in individuals.

But what if you’re just not a solitude kind of person? What if spending time alone is something you actually dread?

Whether you absolutely love or loathe the idea of solitude, here are some ideas to make the most of your time the next time you get the chance for some solitude.

How to Make the Most of Your Time Alone

1. Go on a solo excursion. Whether you travel overseas, or just to a new part of your city, traveling solo can be a tremendously rewarding experience . When you travel alone, you’re able to go at your own pace, picking and choosing the things you want to learn more about. Plus, it also fosters a sense of independence and self-reliance, which is always an excellent asset.

2. Start (and finish) a new book. There’s no better time to read than when you have time all to yourself. Whether you’re into romance, mystery, or historical fiction, pick a book to completely lose yourself in.

3. Indulge yourself. We all have ways we like to spoil ourselves. Maybe it’s picking up a yummy treat at your favorite bakery. Or maybe you like to take a long, bubble bath to relax. Whatever strikes your fancy, indulge yourself a bit.

4.  Stay off social media. It’s all too easy to feel like you’re missing out on everything when you scroll through your newsfeed. Plus, FOMO (fear of missing out) is a real thing.  But now that you actually have time to yourself, take a step away from your social media. You don’t always need to know what other people are doing. In fact, you’ll be doing yourself the favor if you actually focus on what you’re doing instead. Take this time to connect to yourself, and disconnect from social media.

5. Take your time. Time is a luxury that we often forget to enjoy. Think about it. When was the last time you actually had time for a leisurely walk? Or when was the last time you actually got a coffee and sat down to enjoy it rather than rushing off on your next errand? Take your time. Don’t rush.

6. Let your mind wander. Did you know that zoning out is actually a good thing for your brain? So much of our days—our lives—are structured to the point where we suppress our creative thinking. We inhibit our own abilities to think freely, to think purely. This time though, let your mind wander to new places. Let yourself think freely. You may be surprised by where you end up!
