For most of us, life rarely slows down.
Between our jobs, our personal lives, and everything in between, finding the time to relax and recharge is nearly impossible.
Though rare, downtime is crucial for our mental health. In fact, research has proven that humans perform best when they alternate between periods of both relaxation and intense focus.
It’s not often that we’re faced with downtime at work, or even in our personal lives, which is why it can be difficult to make the most of it and find productive things to do.
However, there are some strategies you can utilize to use your downtime effectively, and even make it productive.
Whether you’re trying to figure out what to do with downtime at work, or at home, learn how to make the most of downtime with these 6 strategies.
6 Strategies to Make the Most of Your Downtime
1. Remove yourself from your usual environment. Whether it’s finally using up your vacation time because you have downtime at work, or you’re hitting a lull period, find a way to remove yourself from your day-to-day environment. If possible, travel and get out of town to explore a new place. Open your eyes to new experiences to not only spark your creativity, but also recharge your batteries.
2. Follow your curiosities. We all have curiosities we wish we had more time to explore. Now that you’ve got some downtime-now’s the time! Maybe you’ve been wanting to learn more about French cooking. So download a French cooking book and get reading, or maybe even take a cooking class. Maybe there’s a new museum that you’ve been meaning to check out. Grab a friend and go explore it! Our minds are always craving new information to learn and grow. Use your downtime effectively by following these curiosities, and seeing where your learning takes you.
3. Put down the screen. The key to having productive downtime is to remove all your distractions. One major distraction that we all face every day is the temptation to sit behind a screen. Whether it’s your phone, your laptop, or your TV, make every effort to ditch the screens for a while. It could just be for a few hours, or maybe even an entire day. Trust me, you’ll be using your downtime far more effectively if you can get out there and explore the world, rather than letting it pass you by while you’re behind a screen.
4. Schedule fun activities. When was the last time you got together with your friends and just kicked back and relaxed? Or the last time you met up with your bestie for coffee? Or perhaps you and your partner have been wanting to do that fun pub crawl, or try out that new restaurant. Schedule these activities now during downtime, and make the most of this less busy period with your friends and those who are important to you.
5. Plan out your appointments. Adulting is always hard, but it’s even harder to do when you’re slammed with work and stressed out. Now that you have some downtime though, a productive thing to do would be to schedule any health appointments, even as far as a year in advance. Schedule your dental cleaning, your annual exam, or even more routine appointments like the flu-shot.
6. Reassess your goals. One of the best things you can do to make the most of downtime is to assess where you’re at right now. If possible, remove yourself from your usual environment, whether it’s at work or even at home, and take some time to evaluate where you’re going and whether you’re on track towards your goals. By distancing yourself from your usual environment, you’ll have a clearer perspective. You may find that you actually have new goals now, or that you need to “adjust” some of them. Define meaningful goals that you’ll want to stick to, and outline the steps you need to take to reach them.
