We all know that drinking water is vital for our body’s overall health. Yet it’s undeniable that for many of us (myself included), drinking water is more of a chore than not.
And with all the other drink alternatives out there to tempt us on a daily basis (e.g., soda, coffee, mimosas, etc.) drinking plain old water can seem pretty boring.
But water presents a host of health benefits that no other drink can even come close to. Drinking water provides your body with energy, promotes weight loss, flushes out toxins, boosts your immune system, improves your mood, elevates your creative thinking, and the list goes on and on.
So if you’re looking for ways to simultaneously improve nearly every aspect of your health while also making sure you’re hydrated, look no further than these 10 tips to make drinking water every day a bit easier.
10 Easy Ways to Drink More Water Every Day
1. Add fruity flavors. If you’re someone that finds water to be bland and tasteless, change that by adding your own infusions to it. Add fresh fruit (e.g., strawberries, lemon, or orange slices, etc.), or herbs (e.g., basil or mint). You’ll be far more tempted to drink water when you actually enjoy how it tastes.
2. Always sip water before eating. Whether you’re about to have a meal or a snack, be sure you’re drinking that glass of water beforehand. Not only will this help you to get in some more water for the day, but you’ll also actually eat less because you’ll feel fuller.
3. Dilute your favorite sugary drinks with ice and water. If you can’t give up your daily lemonade, Coke, or sweet tea, try diluting their sugar content with water and ice. This way you’re still getting the water your body needs, along with the sugar you crave.
4. Use a bottle water that’s marked with ounces. If you’re someone that likes to set goals and achieve them, especially when it comes to your health, a marked water bottle may be just the trick to entice you to drink more water. Use a bottle that has the ounces marked, and shoot for up to 72 ounces per day.
5. Use the hairband trick. However many bottles of water you plan to drink per day, convert it to hairbands. So for example, if you plan to drink 3 full bottles, start out with 3 hairbands on your left wrist. For each bottle you drink, move a hairband to your right wrist to keep track. This way you’ll know when you’re finished with your daily water intake for the day, and you can go at your own pace.
6. Eat foods rich in water. If drinking water is a chore for you, try eating it instead with water-rich foods. Try cucumber, watermelon or grapefruit, all of which are at least 90% water.
7. Opt for sparkling water over soda. If you’re someone that likes their fuzzy, carbonated drinks, try drinking sparking water the next time you’re tempted to drink soda. Sparkling water is a great substitute for plain old water, and you can even add a squeeze of lime to it for a bit of extra flavor.
8. Keep it handy. It’s much easier to remember to drink water when it’s nearby. Keep your bottle of water at your desk, on your bedside table, or display it prominently on your coffee table at home. This way it can serve as a continual reminder to drink up.
9. Drink it at your preferred temperature. Whatever temp you enjoy drinking your water at, be it piping hot or ice cold, keep it at that temperature. You’ll be far more motivated to actually drink it when it’s at the temperature you prefer.
10. Set an alarm. Set a water alarm for specific intervals throughout the day to ensure you’re drinking water. Whether it’s every three hours you need to drink X ounces, or every two that you need to have downed a water bottle, use your phone’s alarm to remind you.
